An Evening with French and Foster
Two one act plays by two of Canada's finest playwrights.

Salt Water Moon
by David French
Directed by Valerie Jorgensen

Amanda Sauve as Mary, Jason Leff as Jacob

As the first half of “An Evening with French and Foster”, Rural Root Theatre is pleased to be presenting the award winning one-act play, “Salt Water Moon”, written by David French. To quote from a 1999 interview with David French, “this play has been widely produced across the country and abroad-playing every month somewhere since its creation”.  In the summer of 2007, David French had his directorial debut , with  “Salt Water Moon”, for the Charlottetown Festival. The play is a complex and amusing love story is set between the first and second world wars under a moonlit sky in Newfoundland. It deals with abandonment, social status and the effects of war, as young Jacob Mercer returns home to Colley’s Point to win back his former sweetheart, Mary Snow, a young gal he left a year earlier.
During his absence, Mary has become engaged to someone for whom Jacob has had a long-lasting hatred. Jacob then applies his coy and charming ways to persuade Mary to break off the engagement. Director Valerie Jorgensen  and the cast usually rehearse at the CBBCA , but Rural Root Theatre would  like to acknowledge and thank the Chartwell  Retirement Residence on Shirley’s  Brooke Drive,  Kanata, for also providing a rehearsal space for our use.

My Narrator
by Norm Foster
Directed by Ian Glen

Julia D'Angelo as Lacy, Alex Singer as Miles,
Diane Brown as Barb, Grey Masson as Bob

“My Narrator”, written by Norm Foster, the well known Canadian playwright, first premiered at Calgary’s Lunchbox Theatre in September 2006. After receiving special permission from Norm Foster,  Rural Root Theatre is thrilled to be mounting “My Narrator” for its first ever amateur production. Foster continues to demonstrate that he is one of the country’s funniest writers and “My Narrator”, an engaging, romantic comedy, is no exception. In this one-act comedy, Miles, a socially inept clothing store salesman, tries to strike up a relationship with the very cautious Lacy, a struggling artist who has  a history of  failed  affairs. As he bumbles his way through several gaffes, Miles finds he has more than one person to deal with. Why? Because, Lacy has a narrator in her head, Barb, who  strongly advises her to not get involved with this man. Things start to falter for Miles, but then along comes Bob to the rescue - Miles now has an inner narrator too! Any hope of a long lasting relationship between Lacy and Miles soon begins to diminish. At the same time, Barb and Bob have fallen in love with each other. For the sake of their own interests, they desperately try to mend  the younger couple’s shaky relationship as they try to get things back on the rails. During rehearsals, Director Ian Glen and the cast of four are laughing and enjoying every word of this fast-paced script where timing is everything.
